All About Video File Formats

Vlogging involves more than just filming yourself or
your subject and making a movie that follows a certain
structure to convey a particular piece of information
or to invoke a certain kind of emotion from your
viewers. Even with all the video making wizardry you
may implement to come up with that perfect movie to
share, all will be for naught if you don’t have the
means to share it with people.

Of course, you have the internet, which is a very
powerful tool in disseminating information and
distributing your video, yes, but do you know,
exactly, how you can share your videos through this
medium?

formats most appropriate to use when sharing your

What File Format Should You Choose

There are many possible file formats for your videos.
We have the raw .avi file type, which is universally
readable across many platforms through many programs,
but is quite big in size that it’s not practical to
stream the same or o.ffer it for download. We have
the .mov file type which is very much smaller in size,
perfect for streaming and/or d.ownload, but is only
readable by Apple Quicktime players.

And we have the .wmv file type which I would suggest
if you want to stream a video with the highest quality
possible. The balance between quality and size is just
right, and this file type was actually your best
option.

That is until Flash programs were able to convert
videos into .swf file types, which compresses them to
levels previously unheard of. Basically, your videos
will be reduced into Flash animations, retaining much
of the quality but capable of being d.ownloaded at the
fastest rate possible. Streaming isn’t a concern
anymore, as .swf plays as it loads.

Where To Host Your Videos

If you have your o.wn web space, then by all means,
host your videos there. However, you will need to have
a high bandwidth limit and a significant space size to
house and transmit your videos.

A more practical option, one that has contributed much
to the rise of vlogging in this day and age, is to
host your videos in services like www.youtube.com and
www.videos.google.com . These websites have unlimited
bandwidth that you can use for free. Basically, you’ll
just have to upload your videos onto their servers.
Their systems will compress your videos to a file size
that can be streamed in a matter of minutes even if
your audience has slow connections. You will then be
given a link which you can use to display the
compressed videos and stream the same as on your blog
pages themselves. It’s amazing to think of what digital
technology is now capable of, right?

The Viral Nature Of Videos

The websites we have cited above have their own
communities. This means that your videos hosted there
will be exposed to an audience which you are not even
targeting. Your blog is sure to benefit from such
additional exposure.

Online videos, by themselves, already have a viral
nature. People love them, and they’d be willing to
spread the word about your vlog once they get to enjoy
an entry or two. This is the reason why online
marketers have started to build their own vlog sites
as well.

Regardless of the purpose for your vlog, you will
quickly realize that videos are indeed the next big
thing on the internet, and the next big thing has
indeed arrived.
